POTSDAM CENTRAL DRAFT BUDGET HAS 16 PERCENT LEVY HIKE--The Board of Education Finance Committee took its first look Tuesday at the preliminary spending plan for next year, based on Governor Cuomo's executive budget and projected cost increases. The 27.5 million-dollar draft is up by about 6 percent from the current. The projected tax cap for Potsdam Central is 2.88 percent. Superintendent Pat Brady says projected increases in teacher and employee pensions next year will eat 2 percent by itself. 547-thousand-dollars in federal stimulus money is not available, state aid is flat. Health insurance is up by 9 percent. Brady says under the current scenario, assuming 1.6 million dollars in fund balance and reserves are used again, 16 to 18 teaching positions, and 9 to 10 non-instructional staff would have to go to make ends meet.
