SCHOLAR SPEAKING AT CLARKSON COMPARES BLOOD VESSELS WITH TIRES--Dr. Sheldon Weinbaum, a CUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, told reporters Friday he believes impefections in the vulnerable plaques, the thin layers of fibrous materials on the inner walls of blood vessels, are what cause them to rupture--the leading cause of cardiovascular deaths in the US. Weinbaum says in the early 20th Century, tires often blew because of imperfections in rubber, before stronger polymers were invented. He says the first step to being able to solve the problem in humans is to develop imaging materials where physicians can see those imperfections in the plaques. Weinbaum was on the campus for a series of lectures about his work in bio-med and another topic of his expertise, transportation engineering.
