HEUVELTON MAN ACCUSED OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT FRAUD—35-year-old Joshua Lamere was arrested by State Police this week on felony counts of Grand Larceny and Falsification of Business Records, alleging he gave information to the State Labor Department that resulted in his receiving about 7-thousand-dollars in benefits to which he was not entitled. Lamere was picked up Wednesday in Ogdensburg, arraigned before a Lisbon justice and released to probation supervision until future court appearances.
POTSDAM SCHOOL BUDGET SCENARIO SPARKS STATEWIDE INTEREST—Superintendent Pat Brady told the Board of Education Tuesday the State Rural Schools Association asked him to submit an article for its magazine about the spending plan approved by voters in May. Potsdam's budget with a levy hike nine-tenths of a point above the state-mandated cap, passed with a margin of more than 2-to-1. Brady says of the approximately 50 schools around the state that presented voters with a levy hike above the cap, about 60 percent of those passed. But, the number of “No” votes on those budgets went up by 100 percent. Potsdam saw voter turnout go up by about 5 percent, the number of “Yes” votes increase, and the number of “No” votes drop.
