SHERIFF SAYS STATE POLICE WILL NOT FILL COVERAGE GAPS IF ROAD PATROL IS CUT—Kevin Wells told a gathering of municipal officials in Potsdam last week there has been over 20 State Police retirements in the zone covering St. Lawrence County within the past year, and new Troopers will either replace those still in the county looking to be re-located, or will become part of a border security initiative. County Legislators are considering sweeping budget cuts to include the Sheriff's Criminal Division, mostly Road Patrol Deputies. Wells says if Road Patrol is cut, it will hamper the Drug Task Force and other serious criminal investigation functions.
