COUNTY LEGISLATORS NOT SERIOUS ABOUT CUTS, ONE LEGISLATOR SAYS—District 4 Legislator Alex MacKinnon told the rest of the St. Lawrence County Legislature Services Committee last night its move to keep a clerical position in Real Property Tax Services that was planned for elimination, is a case of a repeated scenario that has gone on for many years of Legislators buying the argument that people are indispensable, and taxpayers suffer for it. The assistant's position handles valuations for towns, instead of towns paying for it themselves. Fred Morrill, District 6 Legislator and also Chair of the Finance Committee, says town supervisors have resisted a re-distribution of sales tax revenue, therefore cutting the position is what they say they wanted. The full board must now decide on preserving the position.  The Legislature is dealing with a draft budget that has a true value tax rate hike of about 20 percent.
