NO MOTION, NO VOTE—ROAD PATROL PRESERVED—There was no move from the floor by St. Lawrence County Legislators Tuesday night to make any cuts to the Sheriff's Department Criminal Division Road Patrol. The number of people who came to see Tuesday's meeting in Canton forced the board to shift the venue from the chamber to the upstairs courtroom. The legislature accepted a slate of cuts from Sheriff Kevin Wells to his department—including a vehicle, a Civil Division Account Clerk, and condiments in the jail's food service. Finance Committee Chair Fred Morrill told the rest of the board cuts have to come from somewhere, as the draft budget for next year has a levy hike of about 21 percent. He also said “there was virtually no desire to cut Road Patrol, but the subject had to be talked about in public.” Board Chair Sallie Brothers says she hopes the “mistake” of cutting Road Patrol is not brought up again anytime soon.
