TOWN OF POTSDAM IS LIKELY AN “AGGRIEVED THIRD PARTY” ON 35 MARKET CONTAMINATION—The town council voted Tuesday to hire an expert to do borings underneath the sidewalk and pavement in front of the former town hall-court building, to see exactly where petroleum residue is coming from. An underground tank installed at 33 Market Street next door in the early 1970's contaminated the basement of 35 Market Street; the leak was confirmed as excavation was being done for the installation of an elevator in the renovation of the building as a stand-alone court. Supervisor Marie Regan says getting the facts about the petroleum leak will allow the town to apply for reimbursement through the State DEC Spill Fund. Regan says it will likely be hard for the state to recover that money, as it is believed the responsible party—whoever owned 33 Market at the time of the leak, is long-deceased.
